YYC – New Calgary International Airport Terminal

  • Client: The Calgary Airport Authority
  • Industry: Hospitality
  • Location: Calgary

On October 31, 2016, YYC Calgary International Airport opened the new International Terminal. Two years after breaking ground and undergoing construction and expansion of the airport, the YYC design team contacted Greenscape to design and build 37 large scale indigenous prairie trees in custom aluminum powder coated round drum planters for various locations in the new terminal.

Our Greenscape team built all 37 trees with natural wood trunks and artificial greenery – birch, aspen, ironwood and poplar – at our warehouses in Burnaby, BC. Packed and shipped across the province in three 53′ trailers. Our onsite team in Calgary installed trees throughout the entire 2-million-square-foot terminal, which meant each team member walked a half marathon every day for 5 days!  That’s a lot of steps!

The elegant new terminal design includes representations of Alberta’s mountains, forests, rivers, wildlife and even cityscapes that all work together to define the space and and make Calgarians and international travellers alike, feel welcomed and at home.
